Build and maintain healthy relationships

The people in our lives, and how often we connect with them, make a difference in our healing. A growing body of science shows that supportive relationships can buffer stress and the negative health impacts associated with ACEs.

Numerous scientific studies have proven that strong social connections aid in healing, help people overcome adversity and tragedy, and build resilience.

Who are your people?

Surrounding ourselves with people who care can do a lot of good. It reminds us we are worth caring for. The more aware we are of these positive influences, the more likely we’ll be to nurture these relationships.

Make a list

Take two minutes to make a list of the most important people in your life, along with a word or sentence about why they made the list.Don’t worry about quantity. Even one caring person can make a difference. Your list can be on a piece of paper or on your phone. Keep it where it’s easy to find and pull it out whenever you need to be reminded that there are people who care about you.
If you can’t think of anyone and are feeling alone right now, you can always add the Crisis Text Line to your list for someone to talk to when you need it. Just text ‘ACES’ to 741741 for free for 24/7 crisis counseling.

Reach out to your person

Think of one person you’re thankful for. Someone you trust. Someone who might have looked out for you in the past. Someone you feel safe being yourself with.

Send a text or call right now to let them know they’re on your mind.

“Why are you calling me?” They may say. “Just to say hi… you were on my mind…” It doesn’t need to be a formal reason. You can even set a timer on your phone to go off each week (or even once a month) reminding you to check in.

Engage in community (virtually)

Finding a way to connect — where others understand what you’ve been through and want to help you heal — can be challenging in normal times. With COVID, it’s extra hard. But there are groups you can join online to get support, share your story, and listen to others.

A few places to start

The Mighty

Louder Than Silence — Inspire
